Accompanying Individuals Navigating Life on the Street

Bridge to the Mountains is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Pittsburgh, PA. The foundation of our work is building meaningful and consistent relationships with individuals experiencing homelessness. We travel to every neighborhood of Allegheny County to meet with folks living in tent encampments, cars, bus stops, abandoned buildings, and anywhere else people call home. We are able to facilitate connection to myriad resources, including, but not limited to: housing, health, and safety.

Vision

Often, nonprofit organizations identify an “at-risk” community and enter it with expertise and a predetermined agenda for change or betterment. Bridge to the Mountains, rather, seeks to meet people where and how they are. We utilize a trauma-informed and humanistic approach, honoring agency and autonomy while supporting and addressing individuals’ unique needs and challenges as they arise. We aim to be above all else relationship-focused and feel privileged to be welcomed into communities of individuals living life on the street. We hope to continue to learn from and listen to the voices of all we encounter.

Values

  • Harm reduction isn’t just a practice; it’s the foundation of our approach, from supporting individuals with substance use to addressing the broader impacts of systemic harm. At its core, harm reduction prioritizes minimizing harm in all its forms while offering non-judgmental, compassionate support. It challenges stigmatizing systems and acknowledges the unique, lived experiences of those we serve. Our work is rooted in collaboration, providing resources and creating space for individuals to navigate their own paths forward on their terms.

  • We understand community as being-with—an existence alongside others that embraces difference, rather than seeking uniformity. We believe community arises through the recognition and respect for the radical otherness of the other. We do not position ourselves as experts over those we serve; rather, our work is a continuous process of listening and mutual exchange. The needs, perspectives, and experiences of those we accompany shape and guide our actions, informing how we show up and what we offer.

  • We are committed to advancing equity by addressing the systemic and intersectional barriers that perpetuate marginalization. We challenge these structures by ensuring that all individuals—regardless of neighborhood—have access to the resources and opportunities that honor dignity and autonomy, especially in historically excluded or overlooked communities. Empowerment, for us, means creating an environment where people can exercise control over their lives and make informed decisions based on their own needs and aspirations.

  • We learn resilience from those we accompany—it’s about walking alongside others, not ahead of them. It's in the quiet persistence and strength it takes to trust yet another "service provider," after enduring relentless harm and betrayal by systems and institutions. Resilience for us means staying consistent, showing up with empathy, and remaining worthy of that trust.

Bridge to the Mountains is contracted by Allegheny County’s Department of Human Services. We have also received grant support from many local foundations including the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the Henry L. Hillman Foundation. We accept both monetary and in-kind contributions from churches, community groups, and independent donors.
